British number one Tim Henman has decided to retire from representing
Great Britain in the Davis Cup.
“I’ve made no secret of the fact that representing Great Britain has
always been a top priority for me throughout my career,” explained the
30-year-old.
“I’ve played some of my best tennis and enjoyed some of my most memorable
matches while on Davis Cup duty.
“However, at this stage in my career the combination of the Davis Cup
format and the rigours of the ATP tour have made it necessary for me to
make this decision.
“After much deliberation I’m confident this offers me the best opportunity
to fulfil some unachieved goals I have left in the game.
“I’ve really enjoyed working under Jeremy Bates and I know much of what
he has put in place since becoming captain has been appreciated by all
concerned.
“I’m sure he will continue to do an excellent job and concentrate his
efforts on the next generation of players.
“Although I won’t be playing, I would still like to make myself available
to both Jeremy and the LTA in the future so that I can draw upon my
experience in the hope of trying to help the British players develop their
full potential.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing in front of the thousands of British fans
both home and abroad and would like to thank every one of them for their
unwavering support over the years.”
Henman made his Davis Cup debut on the grass courts of Manchester in 1994
against Romania, partnering Bates to victory in the doubles rubber on the
middle Saturday of the tie, which Britain eventually went on to lose 3-2.
The Englishman made his singles debut the next year away to Slovakia and
continued to toil in the Euro/Africa Zone of the competition until 1999,
when the team qualified for the World Group before eventually losing to the
USA in an epic tie, Jim Courier beating Greg Rusedski 6-4 6-7 6-3 1-6 8-6
in the deciding rubber.
Britain also earned the right to compete with the world’s elite in 2002
after beating Ecuador 4-1 away, but once more they were thwarted when
Sweden’s Thomas Johansson beat Rusedski in the fifth and final rubber,
this time in four sets.
That was the last tie played on home soil and this year Britain must travel
once more when they face Israel in March in the second round of the Euro
/Africa Zone.
