Serena, Svetlana Cruise Through by Bren O'Brien Monday, 17 January, 2005 American No.7 seed Serena Williams has breezed through to the second-round of Australian Open 2005, accounting for Frenchwoman Camille Pin 6-1 6-1 on Day One at Melbourne Park. The 2003 champion made light work of Pin, progressing in under an hour with a strong serving display coupled with her usual array of powerful returns. Her next opponent will be Madagascan Dally Randriantefy, who also dropped just two games to Czech Zuzana Ondraskova. US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was the first player to register a victory. The Russian No.5 seed also progressed 6-1 6-1 but took just 43 minutes to oust American Jessica Kirkland and set up a second-round meeting with Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, who downed Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg 6-1 6-3. Russian No.9 seed Vera Zvonerava made a solid start to her campaign, accounting for Chinese qualifier Nannan Liu 6-4 6-2 and will play either Jill Craybas or Vera Douchevina. Her compatriot Nadia Petrova, the No.11 seed, ousted Virginie Razzano to set up a clash with Australian Sophie Ferguson, a 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 winner over Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives. Japanese No.16 Ai Sugiyama was the first seed to bow out on Day One, finding Slovakian Martina Sucha in good form. The pair exchanged service breaks twice before another late break gave Sucha the first set. Sugiyama again struggled on serve in the second set and Sucha prevailed 7-5 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes. But Japanese fans had something to cheer about after No.28 seed Shinobu Asagoe progressed at the expense of German Anca Barna. Another seed to falter at her first hurdle was 1995 champion Mary Pierce. The No.24 seed proved no match for compatriot Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, who set up a clash with British qualifier Elena Baltacha. Ukraine-born Baltacha upset Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik, ranked 119 places above her at No.66 in the world, 5-7 6-4 6-4. Fabiola Zuluaga, the No.17 seed who made it to the final four at Melbourne Park 12 months ago, had a good win over Tunisia's Selima Sfar 6-3 7-5. The Colombian's next clash is with German Anna-Lena Groenefeld, a 6-1 6-3 winner over Severine Beltrame. In a clash of two wildcards, Sania Mirza became just the second Indian woman to win a Grand Slam singles match when she came from a set and a break down, winning the final 10 games to knock out local hope Cindy Watson 3-6 6-3 6-0. Hungarian Petra Mandula is her next opponent after she beat Italian No.30 seed Flavia Pennetta. Alina Jidkova has a second-round match against Magdalena Maleeva after accounting for Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual 4-6 6-1 6-4. Jidkova joined fellow-Russian Evgenia Linetskaya in the second-round after Linetskaya notched a 6-4 6-1 win over Lubomira Kurhajcova. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.230.21.121
