Safety fears threaten tennis
From correspondents in Buenos Aires
February 4, 2005
SAFETY concerns may ruled out next week's Buenos Aires stop on the ATP calendar
.
Local authorities closed down the central court overnight after it failed to me
et saftey regulations.
Authorities found that the centre court, at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club,
was not adapted to host the expected 6000 daily spectators.
One stand was found to be covered by a flammable material, while no study had b
een carried out to ensure that the ground could hold a metal stand with 1200 sp
ectators.
Electric lighting and fire saftey regulations do not meet regulations.
Organisers, who have already sold 80 per cent of tickets for the $400,000 event
, must ensure that the necessary measures are carried out before it starts on M
onday.
Argentine authorities have beefed up saftey regulations after 192 people were k
illed in a disco fire here on December 30.
