Kuerten and Nadal Support International Year of Sport
Three-time Roland Garros Champion Gustavo Kuerten and rising Spanish
sensation Rafael Nadal signed their names on a UNICEF manifest today adding
their support to the United Nations' "International Year of Sport and
Physical Education."
The two stars joined forces to support this year-long push to highlight the
power of sport to bridge cultural and ethnic divides and improve the quality
of people's lives. The aim of the year is to encourage the use of sports to
promote education, health, development and peace. Several more players will
add their signatures to this manifest as the week progresses.
In November 2004, World No. 1 Roger Federer took part in the official
campaign announcement at the United Nations' Headquarters in New York City.
UNICEF: "Sport is a means through which we can obtain development and peace.
We need to promote the opportunity to be able to take part in and enjoy
sport, which is a fundamental right that everyone in the world should have."
Kuerten: "Especially at this point of my career I am convinced that you
always need to look around and try to help as much as possible. I think I can
use a bit of my name and influence back home and try and get as many people
involved as possible. And during the circuit, we try to do the same, try to
put the ATP as big as it is as a sport, together with the players and try to
raise some money and help some people who have a lot of disasters happening
all year long, especially poor kids. We have to look out for their futures
and this is the best way to do it."
