Wimbledon: SF Preview
(1) Lindsay Davenport (USA) vs. (3) Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) - Davenport leads
8-3
Both hungry for a Grand Slam title, World No.1 Lindsay Davenport hasn't
claimed one of the big four since her 2000 Australian Open title, while
Mauresmo has yet to take home a Grand Slam title. Mauresmo has experienced
the most success at Wimbledon, reaching her third consecutive semifinal but
never reaching the final round. Davenport won her second of three Grand Slam
titles here in 1999 and one more Wimbledon crown may just be the icing on the
29-year-olds illustrious career.
The two have met on 11 previous occasions but only once at a Grand Slam.
Mauresmo won her first of three victories over Davenport in their second
meeting, in the semifinals at 1999 Australian Open (46 75 75) which
catapulted Mauresmo into her one and only Grand Slam final. Since, Davenport
has dominated their play losing on only one occasion, the finals of Sydney in
2000.
Both players have earned solid berths into the 2005 Wimbledon semifinals.
Mauresmo has not dropped a set, losing only 22 games thus far. Davenport has
lost only one set, challenged by Kim Clisters in the fourth round, losing the
second set in a tiebreak before winning the third 63.
(2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) vs. (14) Venus Williams (USA) - Sharapova leads 2-0
Meeting for only the third time and first at a Grand Slam, the two Wimbledon
champions have a lot riding on this match. Sharapova remains in pursuit of
retaining her Wimbledon crown along with increasing her 22 match win streak
on the grass courts. Venus, who just two years ago dominated the game with
her sister Serena, reaches the furthest round at a Grand Slam since winning
her second Wimbledon title in 2003.
Neither Sharapova nor Williams has truly been tested this fortnight, both
winning all of their matches in straight sets. They both had their toughest
challenge in the quarterfinals, pushed, yet not truly stretched to the limit.
At this stage in the competition, both players are warmed up and ready for
fierce competitiveness.
Sharapova holds a slight advantage over Venus, dictating their two previous
matches and losing only seven games on both occasions. However, both have
held the Venus Rosewater and both strive to hoist the trophy again
