ROME (AP) -- Marcelo Rios has paid a fine for attacking a taxi driver and two
Carabinieri policemen hours after the Chilean tennis player was knocked out
of the Italian Open last year, his lawyer said Tuesday.
Rios' Rome-based lawyer, Luigi Fischetti, said the fine was paid a month ago.
Fischetti would not disclose how big the fine was and court officials were
unavailable for comment, although the lawyer said "it wasn't much."
Rios was already fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike behavior at the players'
party during the Masters Series tournament. He allegedly got rowdy during the
party and went out and attacked the taxi driver and policemen.
Police said that the 26-year-old Rios, accompanied by his trainer and an ATP
official, had been drinking at the time of the incident, which occurred near
St. Peter's Square.
The cab driver called the police after Rios attacked him. When two
paramilitary Carabinieri intervened, the tennis player assaulted them as
well, police said shortly after the incident.
Carabinieri officials filed a complaint against Rios on charges of offense to
public officials.
A 1998 Australian Open finalist, Rios reached the No. 1 slot in the ATP
rankings later that year. He has struggled to regain that form since then
and was knocked out in the third round of the U.S. Open earlier this
month
