Top Two Battle for Fantasy Shanghai Trip
The Race to Shanghai heats up on and off the court as the ATP Fantasy
League goes down to the wire.
With six places to the Tennis Masters Cup still up for grabs as the ATP
circuit reaches the last tournament of the regular season in Paris, there's
another Race to Shanghai that is approaching a similarly exciting finishing
line.
The ATP Fantasy Tennis League looks to be a battle between two managers
separated by just 56 points going into Paris. Spanish manager Miguel Garde
will be hoping to join his countrymen Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya and
Albert Costa in Shanghai if he can maintain his lead over Christian Mattevi.
Garde and Mattevi have been switching places at the top all season, and
while Garde has Lleyton Hewitt in his team, Mattevi will be hoping Andre
Agassi can do the business in Paris to help clinch his all-expenses paid
trip to the Tennis Masters Cup.
"For me, going to Shanghai would be the most exciting experience of my life,
" said the 27-year-old, who works for a law firm in Madrid. "I have had bad
luck in the last two weeks (Hewitt, Costa and Moya injuries) but I hope all
of them will play in Paris."
No Regrets
Garde currently has 3981 points, with Mattevi close behind with 3937, so
everything depends on the outcome of the BNP Paribas Masters. And the
Spaniard is hoping he won't live to regret dropping Agassi after the last
substitution period.
"It's incredible because I have picked Agassi on my team until the last
day of substitutions and unfortunately I changed it to Hewitt at the last
moment," said Garde. "So I'm very sad because of that silly change at the
last moment. I hope Hewitt can do well in Paris because if not I'm sure I
will lose."
