Srichaphan too strong for Costa
Fifth seed Paradorn Srichaphan booked his place in the second round of the
BA-CA Trophy in Vienna with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spaniard Albert Costa.
Srichaphan broke the clay-court specialist in the seventh game of the opening
set and won the set despite a first-serve rate of less than 50%.
Costa came out fighting in the second set but made too many unforced errors
and lost the game in just over an hour.
"Playing Albert is tough so I am glad to be through," said the Thai player.
Srichaphan will now play Robby Ginepri in the next round.
In other matches, American Taylor Dent reached the second round thanks to a
6-1 6-3 win over Austria's Konstantin Gruber.
Bohdan Ulihrach also made it through after struggling to a 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory
over Swedish veteran Thomas Enqvist.
Third seed Rainer Schuttler needed all his experience to get past Jurgen
Melzer.
The German, looking to rediscover the form that once made him a world number
six, evenntually prevailed 6-4 1-6 6-3.
