is now a career 0-6 in ATP finals. The Belgian posts an impressive 9-3 record
in Lyon however, having now reached the quarterfinals, semifinals and final
in his three appearances. He has a 22-22 record in 2004.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Erlich/Ram successfully defended the doubles
title in Lyon. Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram successfully defended the Lyon
crown from 2003, defeating Jonas Bjorkman and Radek Stepanek in this year’s
final. Ram and Erlich were playing in their third final of the year, having
lost their two previous finals (Chennai, Rotterdam).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Soderling: “It’s just a great feeling, it’s a dream I’ve had since I
started playing tennis when I was five six years old so it just feels great.
I played terrific tennis in the first set and then after that I started
getting a little nervous and he started playing a lot better. I was a bit
lucky to get the break in the third set and I really served well.
“I’m going to Moscow early tomorrow morning, but I know I’m going to
celebrate at least a little bit tonight.”
Malisse: “It’s been a great week, I think I played well, my confidence went
up. Today is a little disappointing, he was too good in the first and then it
was a battle in the last two sets, he won the two important points. But I’m
happy I played well and congratulations to him.
"If I can stay calm and play the way I did this week I’ll give myself
chances to get to the finals and if I give myself chances to myself then
eventually I’ll be the winner at the end of the week."
"I’m going to Metz, Madrid, Stockholm, and qualies for Paris. Still a lot of
tennis left after a week like this. I think I’m in the main draw in Madrid
so that will be the priority and then we’ll see.”
Erlich: “I think we’ve had our biggest wins here in Lyon, beating a lot of
the top teams. We feel great on this court. It’s our first title of the year
after a couple of finals, so it feels great. It’s been a long year to wait
for a title. Today we started a bit slow but returned great to get back in
the match.”
Ram: “We’re very happy to win our second Lyon title. We always play great
here. We have a small chance to get to Houston, we have to keep on fighting.
We have a couple more tournaments left so it will be tough.”
