NASDAQ-100 Open
Miami, USA.
APRIL 3 , 2004
Final: (2)Andy Roddick (USA) vs (3)Guillermo Coria (ARG)
Second seed Andy Roddick takes on No. 3 seed Guillermo Coria of Argentina in
the final of the NASDAQ-100 Open. This is the first time since 1995 two of the
Top 3 seeds have reached the final here. That year, No. 2 Andre Agassi defeated
No. 1 Pete Sampras. Roddick won the previous two meetings in Houston, in the
semifinals of the U.S. Clay Courts in 2002 and in a round robin match at the
Tennis Masters Cup last November (both in three sets).
The final will be a best-of-five-set match beginning at noon Sunday. There are
100 INDESIT ATP 2004 Race points and $533,350 available to the winner, while
the runner-up receives 70 Race points and $266,675.
This is the fourth career ATP Masters Series final for Roddick, who is 2-1 in
finals, while Coria takes a 1-1 career mark into his first ATP Masters Series
hard court final. Coria is also looking to win his first career hard court
title and the first in the U.S. Both players are attempting to capture their
second ATP title of the season. Roddick won in San Jose (d. Fish) on Feb. 15
while Coria captured the clay court title in Buenos Aires (d. Moya) on Feb. 22.
Coria is the first Argentine to reach the final here since former coach Alberto
Mancini in 1992 when he lost to Michael Chang. Coria is the first South
American to reach the final since Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten in 2000 (l. to
Sampras). Marcelo Rios of Chile is the only South American to win the Miami
title in the tournament's 19-year history (in 1998).
Roddick is attempting to win his 13 th career title while Coria is trying to
win his eighth career ATP title.
Coria on playing Roddick: "It's going to be a very tough match. I would like to
have revenge against Roddick. He's going to have to win every point. I'm going
to fight very hard every point. Roddick is going to have to earn it. It was
very important to win this match, to come back in this match. I feel pretty
good about that. I also am still pretty hot about my loss against Roddick in
Houston."
Roddick on Coria's improvement on hard courts: "It's probably just between the
ears. The guy can play ball regardless of what surface. Obviously, he feels
most comfortable on clay, but, you know, a lot of times it's just getting out
of the gates on something. I'm always a little uneasy my first couple matches
on clay. But if I do get into the second, third match then I start feeling a
lot better on it. I'm sure that works, you know, vice versa as well."
