Federer To Become 23rd Player to Hold No. 1 ATP Entry Ranking after Reaching
Australian Open Final
Newly-crowned Australian Open champion Roger Federer will become the 23rd
player to hold the No. 1 ranking in the history of the ATP Rankings (since 1973
).
The 22-year-old Federer, who will become the first Swiss man to hold the No. 1
position on the ATP Entry Rankings, takes over the top spot from Andy Roddick.
Federer will assume No. 1 officially on Monday when the rankings are released
from the ATP International Headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Federer will be the third different player to hold No. 1 for the first time in
the past five months, joining Juan Carlos Ferrero, who held No. 1 for eight
weeks from Sept. 8-Nov. 2, 2003, and Roddick, who was No. 1 for 13 straight
weeks from Nov. 3-Feb. 1, 2004.
Federer clinched No. 1 when he defeated Ferrero 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 on Friday night (
Melbourne time) to reach the Australian Open final. On Sunday he defeated Marat
Safin in straight sets to win his second Grand Slam title.
"There is a lot of joy, satisfaction and pride in becoming the first Swiss to
make it to No. 1 on the men's side," Federer said. "Sometimes I may have a
poker face, but I was really nervous tonight.
"There is only one time you get to No. 1 for the first time in your career. I
really want to enjoy it.”
