Muster takes over Austria's Davis Cup team

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Former French Open champion Thomas Muster announced Sunday he will take over as Austria's Davis Cup captain.
He replaces Gunter Bresnik, whose contract ends in June. Bresnik said Saturday at Austria's first-round Davis Cup loss to the United States at Uncasville, Conn., that he probably would be succeeded by Muster.
``I have a young and motivated team, and I honestly hope my experience and know-how can help bring back Austrian tennis to the top,'' Muster told Austrian state broadcaster ORF.
He said he would work to foster team harmony, which he called ``the secret of success.''
Muster won the 1995 French Open and was ranked No. 1 briefly in 1996. He won 44 career singles titles. Muster's last Grand Slam tournament as a player was the 1999 U.S. Open.
Bresnik went 11-7 as Austria's captain. He coached the team in 1992-93 and 1997-04. Earlier, he coached Boris Becker and current U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe.
