Ivanisevic wins in return; Novak withdraws
February 10, 2004
MILAN, Italy (Ticker) - Goran Ivanisevic made a successful return to the court while top-seeded Jiri Novak made an unexpected exit Tuesday at the $380,000 Milan Indoors.
A wild card entrant who was playing in his first singles match in nearly eight months, Ivanisevic fired 25 aces in a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic.
"I have to say I'm surprised with the quality of tennis I played today," said Ivanisevic, who won this event in 1996 and 1997. "I didn't expect it. I know I've been practicing and working hard, but I didn't know I was going to play this way."
Ivanisevic, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, was playing in his first singles match since a first-round loss to Jan Vacek at the Queen's Club in June. The Croatian has been hampered by shoulder, elbow and knee injuries.
On Monday, Ivanisevic teamed with Andreas Seppi of Italy to win a doubles match.
While Ivanisevic made a triumphant return, Novak pulled out of his first-round match due to a strained calf. He was scheduled to play Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Unseeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden continued his comeback from a knee injury by rolling to a 6-3, 6-4 rout of Russia's Nikolay Davydenko.
It is the second event this year for Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion who missed the entire 2003 season after undergoing left knee surgery.
"I was really happy with my game, especially my serve and my returns as well so I'm looking forward to the second round," Johansson said. "It's tough to play matches because I've been away for so long, so every match is important to me and I'm taking each one as it comes. My knee is strong, so I've got nothing to complain about."
Third-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over countryman Alex Corretja.
No. 7 seed Sargis Sargsian of Armenia also moved on with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Seppi.
In matches involving unseeded players, Gregory Carraz of France defeated Italian Vincenzo Santopadre, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 6-3; Mario Ancic of Croatia beat Frenchmen Fabrice Santoro, 6-2, 6-3, and Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland got by Spaniard Alberto Martin, 6-1, 6-4.
