Gonzalez and Kuerten in the Semifinals

In the first quarter final of the day, defending champion David Sanchez record
ed his first win against Gaston Gaudio. The Spaniard had previously lost all-fo
ur match-ups, and as in past encounters, both men fought for a spot in the semi
s with a three-set battle. After an epic first set that Sanchez won 75, Gaudio
came back to the score by winning the second 6-3. A great start from Sanchez in
 the third allowed him to clinch his eighth consecutive victory in this tournam
ent 6-2.

The second quarterfinal encounter proved to be a very exciting match, starring
second seed Gustavo Kuerten and number one Italian player, Filippo Volandri. Ku
erten, showing an impressive tennis level, claimed the first set 61. Volandri c
ame back to win the second 6-2 and even the match to one set all. The third set
 seemed to be a remake of the first one, with Kuerten demonstrating his superio
rity as he served for the match at 5-0, 40-15. The Brazilian couldn急 close the
 match at that point and, after three consecutive breaks, Volandri was back to
score at 5-5. Kuerten served at 5-6, saving a match point on a remarkable drop
shot and finally closed victory in the tie-break.

Also in another combat, Flavio Saretta upset third seed Mariano Zabaleta 6-3, 6
-4. Saretta has been showing a strong tennis level throughout the week, as he h
asn急 dropped a single set. The Brazilian made his way to the semis defeating G
amonal, Horna and Zabaleta and earned, for the second time in his career, a spo
t in the semis of an ATP event (first one was last year in Valencia).

Finally, in the last event of the day and the match Chileans were waiting for,
the clash between Chile旧 two best players, Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez
, took place. In front of a full arena, Fernando Gonzalez defeated compatriot a
nd top seed Massu 7-6(4), 6-3. Even though Massu started strongly leading 3-1 t
hen 4-2, he couldn急 hold his advance and conceded the set in the tiebreak. Gon
zalez kept rolling in the second to close victory 6-3 and become the fourth and
 last semifinalist of this 2004 edition. Gonzalez who won in Vina del Mar two y
ears ago will now meet Saretta for a possible spot in the final.






WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Sanchez: 戦t is great to be in semis again here. Coming into a tournament to de
fend a title is never easy, you always have that pressure that holds you back.
After winning the first round against a tough player such as Chela, I released
a bit of that pressure, and now, being in the semis I am totally relaxed. I am
playing great, feeling strong and will do everything to win?







Kuerten: 戦t was a very weird match with lots of ups and downs. I started
playing very strong but couldn急 keep the level I had in the first set. I need
to get used to be playing at my highest again day after day, in tough matches
like that. It is hard to keep my concentration, which is probably one of the
most important part of the game, and the element that failed me today. ?/p>

in the third set I was one point away from winning 6-0 but couldn急 win. Once
he broke me, he started playing better, relaxed, and I also went away from my
strategy a little. The match could have gone both ways and I was, I think, a
little lucky in the end.?/p>

as far as my result here, I am very happy to be in the semis and playing well
and I will definitely go into the next match very relaxed.?/p>

(about the tournament being held in Vina as opposed to Santiago):in my opinion,
it was definitely a good thing to do the tournament here in Vina. It is a
smaller town, the atmosphere is more relaxed, it is nice to be by the beach. As
far as the organization, it gets better and better each year. The tournament
directors are very concerned about improving the condition and constantly look
for the player旧 feedback.?/p> 

Saretta: 戦 am very pleased with the result I am having in the tournament. Toda
y I play great but particularly served very well which I think was the importan
t element in today旧 victory?

戦 don急 have any preferences as who to play next. I played juniors with Gonzal
ez so I know him better than Massu, but I have no preferences. It is going to b
e a big clash between them tonight and I think the winner will be the one who i
s at his best at the moment.?/p>

SEMIFINAL MATCHES
In the first semifinal match, defending champion David Sanchez will face 2000 w
inner and three-time Roland Garros winner Gustavo Kuerten in their first career
 encounter. The outcome of the match will decide on the first finalist of the 2
004 BellSouth Open by Rosen ATP tournament of Vina del Mar.

In the second semifinal, Chilean Fernando Gonzalez ,who upset first seed and co
mpatriot Massu, will take on Brazilian Flavio Saretta. Saretta is playing for a
 first career final in an ATP event. Even though they never met in an ATP tourn
ament before, both players of 24 years of age know each other very well for hav
ing played junior circuits together.
