Clijsters to have surgery, out three months June 8, 2004 BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Kim Clijsters will have wrist surgery and probably wi ll be out three months, most likely forcing the Belgian tennis star to miss the U.S. Open. Clijsters said on her Web site Tuesday, her 21st birthday, she will have a cyst removed from her left wrist. The No. 2-ranked player already missed the French Open and on Monday withdrew f rom Wimbledon. Clijsters has had problems with her left wrist since March and has not played c ompetitively since early May. The injury was first diagnosed as a stress reacti on but a half-inch tear later was found in her left wrist. Clijsters is right-handed but relies on a strong double-fisted backhand, making it extremely difficult for her to play well with an injured left hand.
