Kafelnikov Withdraws From Australian Open
The 29-year-old has an illustrious history in Melbourne. In 1999, he won the
title, defeating Thomas Enqvist in a four-set final. A year later, he reached
the
final again, but fell to Andre Agassi. He also reached the quarterfinals three
times, in 1995, 1996 and 2001.
Kafelnikov, who has been considering retirement, reached the World No. 1
ranking in May 1999. He ended 2003 No. 40 in the ATP Champions Race.
