Davenport not worried by seeding setback
PERTH, Australia (AFP) - America's world number five Lindsay Davenport said she was not concerned by lower-ranked Venus Williams's higher seeding in the upcoming Australian Open tennis championship.
Tournament director Paul McNamee confirmed here that Venus, ranked 11th in the world, would be the third seed for the event which starts in Melbourne on January 19.
The move follows an announcement by Venus' sister Serena, the world number three, that she would withdraw from the Grand Slam event.
That decision means Davenport, who would have been the tournament's fourth seed, will now be seeded fifth and could potentially face top seed Justine Henin-Hardenne in a quarter final, rather than the semi-final or final.
Venus and her sister Serena have not played on the tour since last year's Wimbledon after injury and personal problems, although Venus made a comeback at a tournament in Hong Kong this week.
"It was something that was decided by our tour about eight weeks ago. It's something that they like to do," Davenport said.
"I'm not against it. I mean they helped me out quite a bit when I was out eight months they seeded me two or three. It's unfortunate that I'm the one who's affected, but that's life.
"I mean being seeded four or five - if I'm playing well you should be able to beat anybody in any round."
McNamee said the top two seeds would go to Belgians Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, the world's number one and two players respectively. France's Amelie Mauresmo would probably be seeded fourth.
"I can say Venus will be seeded third as we stand right now behind Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters. Under a special seeding, the WTA had recommended that for the next group of tournaments that Venus has a special seeding which means she will come in at three," he said.
