Novak, Kuerten Ready for Auckland Semis
Third seed Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil took another step towards defending his
title with a straight sets victory over American fifth seed Vincent Spadea, 6-2
7-6 (4). After a fast start, Kuerten found himself 1-4 down in the second set
as Spadea began dictating play. But the third seed had plenty in the tank, and
stepped up another gear to force a tiebreak, then closed it out with real
authority.
The Brazilian will have to wait before finding out his semifinal opponent. Play
was suspended due to rain at 9:30 pm Thursday night, with Dominik Hrbaty of
Slovakia and qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany locked at a set all.
Of the two unfortunate quarterfinalists, Hrbaty definitely looked the keener to
move off the court.
Kohlschreiber had fought back intelligently after a humiliating first set,
where he looked a little out of his depth. Once he found his rhythm, he found
at the same time that he could trouble the Slovak.
Second seed Jiri Novak never makes a big noise, but in Auckland we have come to
expect the quiet approach from the big Czech. In the first set of his quarter-
final against Raemon Sluiter of Holland, he looked to be struggling, but had
fought his way back to a set all by the time rain briefly interrupted play.
Then his experience told. Finding it easy to slip back into his game after the
break, Novak quickly forced the issue and Sluiter only had to waver for a
second for the Czech to pounce. 4-6 6-4 6-4.
Of all the players here, Novak has the best Auckland record (he has called
Auckland "his second home"). He has only won one title, in 1996, but has only
once been eliminated before the quarter-finals in five subsequent appearances.
1996 - won tournament
1997 - lost semifinal
1999 - lost second round
2002 - lost semifinal
2003 - lost quarter-final
2004 - ???
His opponent in Friday's Vodafone singles, Rafael Nadal of Spain, is one of the
newest, but already the older players are looking over their shoulders. At 2-1
in his quarterfinal against Gregory Carraz, the Frenchman retired with a
hamstring injury and handed the young Spaniard a spot among the final four.
Speaking afterwards, the Spanish teenager said he was sorry for his opponent,
but did not mind an easy route to the semifinal.
About his own game, he said "Confidence is everything. In all my matches, it
has been confidence in myself that allowed me to win." He was asked if he
deliberately tried to hit a winner with every shot, and replied, "I don't
realise it, but I have been told by people watching that I look like I am
playing for my life. For sure I am always aggressive."
He cites countryman Carlos Moya as his favourite player, and often rallies with
him on their home island of Mallorca.
