h Australian Open Coverage http://www.atptennis.com/en/newsandscores/news/2004/espn_coverage.asp NEWS JANUARY 17, 2004 ESPN Announces Impressive 2004 Tennis Television Schedule: 600 Hours Begins wit h Australian Open Coverage c Getty Images ESPN will televise a minimum of 76 original hours of exclusive coverage from t he Australian Open, “The First Grand Slam of Tennis,” starting Sunday, Jan. 1 8 and concluding with the women’s championship Friday, Jan. 30 at 9:30 p.m. ET and the men’s championship Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 p.m. Most telecasts will b e live at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., supplemented by same-day telecasts in the afterno on. The Australian Open is the start of an unprecedented commitment to professional tennis. In 2004, ESPN and ESPN2 will again televise nearly 600 hours of tennis - including more than 300 hours from three Grand Slam events - the Australian Open from Melbourne, the French Open from Roland Garros in Paris, and culminati ng with ESPN’s second year of coverage of The Championships at Wimbledon. For the second year, ESPN is the only American network to cover three of tennis’ f our most prestigious events. The schedule also features Davis Cup, the men’s Tennis Masters Series comprisi ng the ten best events on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Wom en’s Tennis Association (WTA Tour) events, including the year-end championship of each series, in Houston and Los Angeles, respectively. “ESPN is committed to harnessing all our resources - unrivaled in sports media - to serving the tennis fan,” said Mark Shapiro, executive vice president of programming and production. “The exclusive coverage from Australia launches ou r plan to follow the emerging stories of tennis. Last year, it was the new riva lries - the Williams sisters, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters on the w omen’s side -- and a new generation of outstanding men’s talent, led by Andy Roddick and Roger Federer that captured our attention. We look forward to follo wing those compelling stories and searching out new discoveries in 2004. ” In addition to ESPN and ESPN2, ESPN Classic shows great matches from the past a nd ESPN International televises tennis around the world. COMMENTATORS & TECHNOLOGY ESPN’s tennis commentator team will again be led by former star player and 25- year ESPN commentator Cliff Drysdale, joined by the veteran Tim Ryan who joined ESPN last year to call matches. Analysts Mary Carillo, Mary Joe Fernandez, Pat rick McEnroe, Pam Shriver and MaliVai Washington will provide expert commentary . In addition, Chris Fowler will return as on-site host for Grand Slam coverage , partnered with Brad Gilbert. Fowler will also call play-by-play on select mat ches, as will Shriver. Suzy Kolber will join Fowler to share host duties at the French Open and at The Championships at Wimbledon.
