Paradorn vs Guga Highlight of Big R3 Showdowns
Gustavo Kuerten and Paradorn Srichaphan will meet in a blockbuster third-round
clash at the Australian Open after very different victories on Wednesday. Kuer
ten toiled in 30C deg. heat to defeat tough Croat Ivan Ljubicic 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-
4, 6-3, a victory which followed his draining five-set win over John Van Lottum
in the first round.
In contrast, Srichaphan played just one set in the cool of Wednesday evening be
fore Frenchman Jerome Golmard retired with a right thigh injury. The Thai had a
comfortable win over Jose Acasuso in the first round, when he dropped just 10
games.
Srichaphan, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon and the US Open last year
, said:
n my last two Grand Slams I have reached the second week. On the first day I
got here it was my goal to reach the second week. But that is still a long way
away, I've got a tough opponent waiting for me on Friday.?
Srichaphan won his only meeting with Kuerten at Tennis Masters Madrid (on hard
court) in 2002.
In other big third-round showdowns, top seed Andy Roddick faces big-serving
countryman Taylor Dent, who fought off Juan Ignacio Chela in five sets. And
defending champion Andre Agassi runs into Thomas Enqvist, who has a winning
5-4 record against the four-time Melbourne champion.
