Clijsters Out with Wrist Injury
Defending champion Kim Clijsters has withdrawn from the tournament after
suffering from bone bruising and tendonitis in her left wrist during her
second round win over Angelika Roesch.
“It's definitely very, very disappointing,” said Clijsters. “It's very
frustrating because I felt like I was playing well. Especially in Paris and
Antwerp, I was playing really well. Then having to go through this here, this
is for me one of the favorite tournaments throughout the whole year.”
Clijsters said the injury happened at the start of the second set during her
match on Friday night, which she went on to win 6-1, 6-3. But the Belgian,
seeded No. 2 this week, said the injury got worse overnight.
“It felt like it was getting worse when I was hitting backhands,” said
Clijsters. “I felt like I couldn't balance or have a stable sort of backhand,
like grip or anything. Then after the match, I put ice on it, had the physios
who are here look at it. It felt a lot worse this morning again.”
Clijsters, who so far during her career has managed to avoid serious injuries,
was not sure how long the injury would stop her from playing.
“It could take up to six weeks for this to heal,” said the Belgian. “They
don't know. It could take up to two, three weeks. I don't know how long it's
going to heal. That's a little bit frustrating, as well, is the not knowing,
you know, what's going to happen in the next couple of weeks.”
Although Clijsters was not due to play her third round match against American
Laura Granville on Sunday, the Belgian said there was no chance of the injury
healing in time. “One day, I don't think that's going to make a difference at
all,” said Clijsters. “I also want to be fair towards the WTA. Say if they
put me another night match tomorrow, I don't want to come here tomorrow and
sort of screw up the whole schedule.”
