ATP, WTA offer sympathy
The ATP and WTA issued a joint statement on Friday expressing their sympathy
for the victims of Thursday's bombings in Madrid in which nearly 200 people
were killed. "The ATP and WTA Tour extend their deepest sympathies for the
victims of the recent bombing in Madrid," said the statement.
"We have many players with ties to that region and our collective thoughts and
prayers are with those players, their families, the city of Madrid and everyone
who was affected by this senseless act."
Spanish players are prominent fixtures on both the men's and women's
professional circuits.
Juan Carlos Ferrero is the number two in the men's world rankings while country
man Carlos Moya has already won two tournaments this season and is third in the
champions race.
Both the ATP and WTA have tournaments scheduled from next month in Spain. The
women are scheduled to play in the Spanish Open in Madrid from May 17-23 while t
he men will play in Valencia from April 12-18 and Barcelona from April 26 to
May 2.
Madrid is also the site of one of the ATP's biggest events, the Madrid Masters
in October.
