Scud hires Sampras trainer Mark Philippoussis has reacted to criticism over his fitness by hiring Pete Sampras' former trainer Brett Stephens to resurrect a stalled career. The conditioner worked closely with 14-time Grand Slam champion until the American's retirement following his fifth victory at the US Open in 2002. The 27-year-old has been practising with compatriot Lleyton Hewitt and his coach Roger Rasheed in Florida in the past few days. Stephens is a stickler for dietary and fitness discipline and will work alongside the Wimbledon finalists father and coach, Nick. Philippoussis slumped to his fifth consecutive straight-sets defeat in Indian Wells last week and is placed in 13th in the world rankings.
