Serena: "I'm 100 percent planning on going to Athens"
March 30, 2004
KEY BISCAYNE, United States (AFP) - American tennis star Serena Williams declared "I'm 100 percent planning on going to Athens," one day after she expressed concern about safety precautions at August's Olympic Games .
Williams, returning to the court here at the WTA and ATP Masters Series event after an eight-month injury absence, said she was "misinterpreted" when saying that safety concerns could make her uncomfortable enough to skip Athens.
"I just wanted to clear the air," Williams said. "I can't wait to play singles. It will be my first time playing singles. I won doubles. I love trading pins and I wouldn't miss that for the world, the pin trades."
US Fed Cup and Olympic captain Zina Garrison has not made her selections for Athens, but reigning Olympic doubles champion sisters Serena and Venus Williams and reigning singles champion Venus Williams are likely to be selected.
Unhappy about a newspaper headline declaring "Serena is unsure if she's playing the Olympics", Williams said, "I never said that, if you look back in my transcripts. I just said I was aware of things that happen in the world and I will not let things that happen in the world stop me from living my life."
But a transcript of her previous comments indicated there were conditions under which she would not go to the Olympics, based upon her response when asked if her security concerns could prevent her from going to Athens.
"I think my security and my safety and my life is a little bit more important than tennis," she said. "And so if it became a real concern to where I personally wouldn't feel comfortable, then I wouldn't go to Athens because I like my life. I like to live, like waking up in the morning."
Asked earlier about safety concerns in Athens, Williams responded, "It's definitely a concern of mine. I would be kind of naive to say it isn't. You've got to be really careful in the world these days. There is so much going on.
"It's very unfortunate but it's just either you go or don't go and I mean hopefully I'll go."
Williams did comment Sunday that she did not want to live in fear but gave far from a 100 percent commitment to an Athens trip.
"I agree you can't stop living your life because you are scared something is going to happen," she said. "I've got to be able to keep moving. I'm that kind of person. But at the same time, I'm very aware of things that are going on in the world. I read a lot so I'm very aware of a lot of stuff."
