Kuznetsova qualifies for WTA Championships

LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Svetlana Kuznetsova has lined up a second million-d
ollar payday this season by qualifying for November's WTA Championships.

The teenager plundered the largest prize in women's sport earlier this month wh
en she picked up $1 million for winning her maiden grand slam title at the U.S.
 Open.

She can match that payday in November, however, if she triumphs at the end-of-s
eason finale.

The Russian became the third player to qualify for the November 10-15 event in
Los Angeles, joining American Lindsay Davenport and France's Amelie Mauresmo in
 the eight-player singles field.

Having started the season ranked 36th in the world, Kuznetsova is now at number
 five having won three titles.

The race for the remaining five spots is tight with six weeks left until the Ch
ampionships.

Russians Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova, sixth and ninth in the standings
, will improve their positions with strong performances this week. Sharapova is
 playing a small event in Seoul while Dementieva is competing in Belgium.

U.S. heavy hitters Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati lie seventh and eighth
 with Venus Williams 10th.

Last year's champion Kim Clijsters has played just five tournaments this season
 due to injury. The Belgian is down in 17th spot, out of the running.

Kuznetsova is also flying high in the doubles stakes. Together with compatriot
Elena Likhovtseva, the 19-year-old is ranked second in the standings to reach L
A. Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez lead the doubles standings.

Four doubles pairs will play the Championships.
