Stevenson has right shoulder surgery
September 21, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson had
surgery Tuesday for a right shoulder injury that has bothered her since January
2003.
``Hopefully she'll be back on the court in six to eight months,'' Stevenson's m
other, Samantha, said by telephone. ``She'll definitely miss the clay season an
d probably the grass season and maybe come back for the summer.''
Stevenson is a former top 20 player now ranked 143rd. In 1999, she became the f
irst female qualifier to reach the Wimbledon semifinals and won a bronze medal
in singles at the Pan American Games.
She lost in the first round of the U.S. Open last month as a singles wild card
and reached the second round in mixed doubles with Rick Leach.
Hampered by the shoulder problem, Stevenson played in the main draw at just sev
en WTA Tour events this season. After the Open, she had an MRI that showed she
had three labral tears in her shoulder and needed surgery. Since last year, she
had tried to avoid an operation, hoping rehab alone would work.
``She looked like she was having a breakthrough at the end of the 2002 season,
and then all of a sudden she plummeted. We knew there was a problem,'' Samantha
Stevenson said. ``The plan was to see if Alexandra could be saved from surgery
.''
