MALMO, Sweden (Reuters) - Australia completed a thumping 5-0 victory over
Sweden in their Davis Cup quarter-final on Sunday after Mark Philippoussis
won the second reverse singles against Magnus Norman, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Earlier in the day Wayne Arthurs beat Davis Cup debutant Joachim Johansson,
6-3, 3-6, 7-6, in a battle of big servers, the pair rifling a total of 36
aces during the match.
Swedish captain Mats Wilander rested his first choice players, Jonas Bjorkman
and Thomas Enqvist, as the hosts were already out of the tie having trailed
3-0 after the first two days.
Australian captain John Fitzgerald gave world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt a rest and
instead allowed Arthurs, who had shown impressive form in winning Saturday's
doubles alongside Todd Woodbridge, to take his place against Johansson.
Johansson, whose girlfriend is Hewitt's sister Jaslyn, made a nervous start
but raised his game in the second set to win it 6-3.
The Swede stayed with Arthurs all the way to the tiebreak in the final set
where the Australian proved too strong, winning it 7-4.
Philippoussis blasted 21 aces past Norman and needed just a single break in
the first and the third set to win.
He took advantage of some weak serving by Norman at 5-5 in the first set to
break him and, after losing the second set, he broke Norman in the third for
5-3 before sealing victory with an ace.
Australia will host Switzerland in September's semi-finals after the Swiss
beat France 3-2 in Toulouse.
