Mark Philippoussis admitted today that he believes in fairytales when he reached the Wimbledon final for the first time just two years after spending two months in a wheelchair recovering from knee problems. (真感人,曾經在輪椅上的Mark這回又要演出像Goran Ivanisevic的大震撼) On Sunday he will face Swiss Roger Federer, in a bid to repeat fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt and lift the men's title after overcoming Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes. The unseeded Philippoussis said: "I've been through a lot. But everything happens for a reason. I've always said that. So everything's been worthwhile." Did he believe in fairytales: "Yeah. Why not?" He confessed he had given up hope of making it to the final of the world's leading tennis tournament. Now he has become the fourth successive finalist from down under after Pat Rafter (twice) and Hewitt flew the flag and it "feels good". Philippoussis, who wore bandages with inspiring messages in Greek, said: "It's just a great thing for Australian tennis and Australia. I'm proud of the Greek heritage I have." (Scud,具有希臘血統?) The start of his knee problems came in the quarter-finals of The Championships four years ago when he was forced to retire while leading Pete Sampras, who went on to take the sixth of seven titles, by a set. (哎哎哎,那年真是一個令人惋惜的遺憾 這麼多年來在Wimbledon,荷蘭重砲手Krajicek是少數讓球王時期的Sampras極度被威脅 的人物;Mark當年則是令人注目地帶給Pete極大的挑戰) "I was feeling extremely disappointed and just scared of not knowing what had happened to me. So there were a lot of mixed feelings." He had surgery on the knee three times -- January and December 2000 and March 2001 -- as his career came under threat. So the sublime completion of an unthinkable comeback against Federer would add a poignancy to a tale that could have come from the pen of Hans Christian Andersen in another era. All the promise of his youth, during which he made the Wimbledon quarter-finals three years in a row, seemed to be dissipating in unfulfilled potential. His reputation for developing a wild lifestyle by amassing a collection of motorbikes, developing skills as a snowboarder and enjoying reported dalliances with a series of ladies, including fellow player Anna Kournikova, had already given vent to suggestions that burn-out would come sooner rather than later due to activities away from the courts. But Philippoussis has endured the lows of his injury setbacks and insists he has tailored his personal preoccupations to help his tennis. "I've stopped a lot of things. Things that were more dangerous than snowboarding, like skydiving, motor bikes, street bikes and dirt bike riding." (挖靠,我以前都不知道他有那麼多刺激的休閒~~~) In 2001, Goran Ivanisevic won the men’s title as an unseeded wild card, after losing three finals previously and playing through the pain of a shoulder injury that had kept him out of the game for months beforehand. Now, two years later, Philippoussis stands on the verge of another fairytale comeback storyline, that John McEnroe has aptly described as "Hollywood". Movie fan Philippoussis would appreciate that ---- he might even get a starring role if he lifts the famous gold trophy on Sunday.
