Team Needs:
A wingman, no pun intended, for KG and some help at the point guard
position.
Outlook:
Was Minnesota’s season disappointing? Yes. Was it overly surprising?
No, not entirely. Does their playoff drought have to last more than
one season? Definitely not.
The Wolves have talent in KG, Ricky Davis, Rashad McCants, and Marko
Jaric – they just need one more piece to contend again in the
Northwest Division. If Minnesota makes signing free-agent point guard
Marcus Banks a priority than they shouldn’t be looking for a point
guard in the draft. That would assure the Wolves intent on drafting a
swingman to complement KG.
Also, rumors that Minnesota might be shopping their 6th overall pick
cannot be discounted. They could make draft night very exciting.
Most Suitable Prospects:
Rudy Gay – The way players have been sliding up and down draft boards
over the past few weeks, all or none of these prospects could be
available when David Stern calls on the Timberwolves for their sixth
selection. Regardless, Gay is the most athletic of Minnesota’s options.
Pairing him with KG could mean big things for the Wolves in the coming
years.
Adam Morrison – RealGM’s J.T. Magee has Morrison going to Minnesota in
his latest mock draft, something I’d have to agree with – If he’s
still available. Morrison would be a nice scoring option to take some of
the heat off of Garnett, and Ricky Davis. A starting line-up including
Davis, Morrison, and KG would make for an optimistic outlook on 2007.
Marcus Williams – If Hawks’ GM Billy Knight stands by his word and
doesn’t draft a point guard in this draft, Williams could become an
option for the Wolves. They would benefit from his pass-first mentality
and good court vision. Williams excelled at UCONN with teammates similar
to what the Wolves have in Davis and KG.
Best Case Scenario: Minnesota nabs Adam Morrison. A player that I think
has no business falling to the sixth spot. After speaking this week with
Mark Bartelstein, Adam’s agent, I got some insight into how hard he’s
working, and on his plans to bulk up his frame.
Worst Case Scenario: The Wolves select Marcus Williams and create a
logjam at the point guard position. The Wolves already have Marko Jaric,
Troy Hudson, Anthony Carter, and Marcus Banks on their current depth chart
at point guard. If they hang onto Carter and Banks, whose contracts
are up, that’ll give them as many as five point guards. Meanwhile
they’ll stunt the growth of not only Williams, but Banks as well.
