Obama aides change their rhetoric on economy

WASHINGTON (AP) -- One of President Barack Obama's economic advisers said
Sunday that the economy is fundamentally sound, a striking reversal from the
Democrat's campaign rhetoric as his administration now guides the nation's
financial health amid dire conditions.
歐巴馬總統的經濟顧問之一在星期天說美國經濟體制基本上沒有問題，這和民主黨在競選
時的論調背道而馳。
During the fall campaign, Obama mercilessly mocked his Republican opponent,
Sen. John McCain, for declaring, "The fundamentals of our economy are
strong." Obama's team painted the veteran senator as out of touch and failing
to grasp the challenges facing the country.
在競選時歐巴馬毫不留情地取笑他的共和黨對手所說，「我們的經濟基本面很堅強」。

On Sunday, economic adviser Christina Romer was asked during an appearance on
NBC's "Meet the Press" if the fundamentals of the economy were sound. "Of
course they are sound," she replied.

Vice President Cheney charged Sunday morning on CNN that President Obama is
using the recession “to try to justify” what is probably the largest
expansion of federal authority “in the history of the Republic.”
前副總統錢尼星期天早上在CNN節目（國家現狀）上指控歐巴馬政府以經濟衰退為幌子
來推動也許是美國歷史上最大的聯邦政府擴權。
“I worry a lot that they're using the current set of economic difficulties
to try to justify a massive expansion in the government, and much more
authority for the government over the private sector,” Cheney said in his
first television interview since leaving office. “I don't think that's
good. I don't think that's going to solve the problem.”
「我很擔心他們利用現在經濟上的問題來作為大幅擴大政府的正當理由，給政府許多權力
來控管私人機構，」錢尼在離開白宮後的第一次電視訪談中說。「我不相信這樣做是件好

目前受到很大關注的地方是，歐巴馬是否在把美國推向社會主義？這次訪談中錢尼還提到
經濟問題是大環境的問題，不該只歸罪前朝。
有趣的是，在柯林頓下台之前，前朝總統（更不用提副總統）鮮少批評當今總統，有點不
在其位不謀其政的意思。卡特會作些邊際的批評，但是柯林頓作的是政策上的批評。柯林
頓時代老布希碰到歸罪前朝時還是逆來順受不作聲，由共和黨的當朝國會議員出面辯解。
因為歐巴馬真要怪很大的話，反彈會撕裂政壇族群。歐巴馬上任50天，民調正負差距只剩
6％,顯現出百日之後要推動政策只有更加困難。
另一點是Cheney這字的發音，有些地方特定念為「七尼」，如 Spokane, WA旁的小鎮，東
華盛頓大學的所在地。
