Youth and adult unemployment are measured by the percentage of males aged
between 16 and 25
and 26 and 64 who are recorded as claiming unemployment benefit.
Although these measures do not
mirror each other exactly they are positively correlated and therefore
they are included separately in
the regressions. Inasmuch as the U–C relationship is positive we expect
positive signs on theunemployment measures in the regressions.
A stronger relationship between youth unemployment and
specific crime rates would be evidence of a stronger motivational effect of
unemployment on younger
males.
