不過我覺得有些事情還是講清楚比較好
Henry Clay Work這個作曲家是十九世紀美國有名的作曲家
生於1832年，卒於1884年
是個自學音樂的強者
古老的大鐘的教育意義在於教導孩子們生命的循環週期
大部分都會避免把死亡概念放入童謠的歌詞中
(可能就是這首童謠過去未獲台灣青睞的原因)
但是「古老的大鐘」卻透過伴隨祖父一生的老時鐘故事
帶領孩子回顧祖父由誕生、結婚而至老死的一生
在二戰後傳入日本後，這首帶有"死亡"意義的童謠
在時間的以及平桑十分日式的哀傷嗓音催化下
至今已經儼然成為"屬於日本人"的童謠了
這個"大鐘"是真實存在的大鐘
被家族代代保留下來
2003年的紅白，平井堅就曾遠赴美國
在大鐘前將這首感人的歌曲演唱完
(噢~真是可歌可泣的故事XD)

My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.

In watching its pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four when he entered at the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;

My grandfather said of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found;
For it wasted no time, and had but one desire
At the close of each week to be wound.
And kept in its place not a frown upon its face,

An alarm that for years had been dumb;
