After thumping the defending NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks 110-97 at home
Friday night, the Kings suffered a bit of a letdown as the team came up short
to the Atlanta Hawks 106-99 Sunday at Power Balance Pavilion.

Coach Keith Smart says the contrasting outcomes are an example of a young
team.

“It’s an experience thing. You’ve got to grow through that part,” said
Smart. “With a young team or a team like ours, you’re excited to play a
big-name team and you bounce back the next day and you don’t have the energy
you needed – that’s going to grow with our team over time.”

For the most part, Smart was pleased with the way the team played against
Atlanta, noting it was short periods of poor play that accounted for the loss.

“As bad as some spurts of the game we played, we still were in that game
with a chance to win,” the Kings coach said. “With two All-Star players
making plays (for the Hawks), we still had a chance, but we gave a lot of the
game back to them with some of the mistakes we made, both offensively and
defensively.”

Kings center DeMarcus Cousins says the extra practice time during the team’s
nine-game homestand will go a long way toward correcting any mistakes.

“Consistency takes practice. We have to continue to do it over and over
again, and continue to practice,” Cousins said. “It’s going to take time.
It’s not something you can just say, ‘O.K., let’s try to be consistent.’
You have to continue to work at it.”

Smart specified defensive breakdowns toward the end of possessions as an area
in which Sacramento is striving to improve.

“We may go through the whole possession of a shot clock and we’ve done
everything well and those last 3-5 seconds of the shot clock, you don’t box
out or you give up penetration or you don’t get your hand up on contesting a
shot,” he said. “There were so many defensive possessions we had last night
(where) we did everything well, we did everything perfect, except for the
closeout, the contesting the shot and then chasing down the rebounds. We gave
up little things like that.”

The Kings coach said that he has otherwise been pleased with the defensive
play of his club, particularly guard Tyreke Evans, who Smart says has
unselfishly become the best defensive player on the team.

“Every assignment that we’ve given him, he’s taken it,” the Kings coach
said. “The guy has sacrificed his offensive game to say, ‘We’re going to

The third-year guard will continue to be challenged Tuesday night when the
Kings host the Golden State Warriors. Evans will likely see time against
Monta Ellis, who is one of the League’s elite scorers. The University of
Memphis product, however, has already helped contain Ellis to an average of
15 points in the teams’ two previous meetings this season, seven points
below Ellis’ season average.

swirling trade rumors.
