For seven years running Jan-Michael Gambill played The Championships at
Wimbledon, once reaching the quarter-finals. But although he is now too lowly
ranked for automatic entry, he has reached the final round of qualifying and
is one win from next week's main draw.
The 28-year-old American from Washington State required almost two hours to
beat Andrea Stoppini, the 238th ranked Italian, by 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) and
now plays Noam Okun of Israel to decide who goes to Wimbledon.
Gambill, seeded 13th in the qualifying tournament, had many precarious
moments against Stoppini as they contested their second round match in
increasingly cool and windy conditions.
In the first set, Gambill saved two break points at 5-all, taking the game
with a netcord forehand winner, and in the tie break led 6-3. But Stoppini
saved two set points with aces until Gambill forced an error on the third
chance. Stoppini broke Gambill's serve to lead 2-0 in the second set and had
five break points for a 5-2 lead. But Gambill broke back in the ninth game,
saved two set points in the tenth,and another in the twelth.
In the second set tie break, Stoppini saved two match points and missed two
set points before Gambill won through on a third match point when he forced a
forehand error from the Italian.
"I tried to qualify here when I was 19 but didn't know a thing about playing
on grass," said Gambill. "I have had a problem with my shins for the past two
years and it is hard for me to train the way I need to. I have beaten most of
the guys in the top 50 and been in the top 50 myself but I just barely missed
getting direct into Wimbledon and that is why I am here.
"Today I let him dictate most of the rallies which is not what a top 50
player should be doing. I thought if I was going to go down I should play
like a man and things turned around."
