Robby Ginepri's Diary: Entry No. 1
by Robby Ginepri
Saturday, August 27, 2005
Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., is gearing up to compete in his sixth US Open
and is entered in the men's singles event. The 22-year-old has been playing
since he was 12 and turned pro back in 2001. Ginepri will be sharing his
thoughts and experiences throughout the US Open in a diary he is writing for
USOpen.org. In his first entry, he discusses his arrival at the USTA National
Tennis Center, his practice schedule and an upcoming trip to a Giants/Jets
game.
I arrived in New York on Wednesday and checked into my hotel uptown in
Manhattan. I came with my coach, Francisco Montana, who's a former ATP pro
and has been coaching me since November 2004. My parents and my older sister,
Jenni, are coming tomorrow to watch me play and support me.
Since I've been here, I've only talked to a couple of the other players.
Everyone's so busy, it's really hard to find the time to hang out. But we all
get along for the most part. We see each other week in and week out at
tournaments, so at this point we really know each other.
I get court time every day at the USTA National Tennis Center to practice,
and I've mostly been hitting with my coach. Yesterday I practiced on the
Grandstand. I've also been working out at the hotel gym. Leading up to the
Open, my workout routine was to hit for a couple hours every day. I usually
like to play a set and a half in the morning and then work on my serve later
in the afternoon. I also work out at the gym a lot. I usually run or ride the
bike, and I also lift weights with my trainer.
The draws also came out on Wednesday, and that's when I found out I'm going
to play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in my first-round match. I don't know
him at all. I've never played him before, so I'm just planning on going out
there and playing my game. Tennis isn't like football or basketball where you
watch tapes of an opponent you've never played before to prepare. Francisco
will just do research on Guillermo, talk to some other players who've played
him before, and then prep me before the match.
Based on the draw, there's also a possibility that I could end up playing
Andy Roddick in the second round, and it would probably be a night match.
That would be really tough if it happened because I've been friends with Andy
for so long, probably since we were about 10 years old. But obviously we both
have to get past the first round before that would happen. Even if it did,
we're both professionals, so we would just go out there and put our
friendship aside so we can play our best against each other.
I know it's definitely going to be a tough two weeks, but I'm not too nervous
for my first match. I have the same attitude every time I'm going into any
match I play, and that's just to hope to do my best and give it everything
I've got.
Tonight I'm going to a Jets/Giants game to relax. I'm going to meet Jonathan
Vilma, who's a middle linebacker on the Jets, and was last year's NFL Rookie
of the Year. I got the whole thing set up through my new sponsor, Under
Armour, who makes performance apparel for athletes. They just started
sponsoring me right after Wimbledon. Other than the game tonight, I think the
only other thing I might have time to do in New York is go to a Broadway
show.
I'll let you know how things are going in my next diary entry.
