Arthur Ashe - MS - 2nd Round
Match Statistics
James Blake USA 6 6 6
Igor Andreev RUS 2 2 4
The American radiated calm and confidence right out of the gate. He took
control with solid cross-court shots and aggressive net approaches, while
Andreev played tight to the baseline. Blake's all-court style worked; the
American soon was up two breaks in just the first three games.
Blake and Andreev headed into the third set on serve, but with two impressive
sets already under his belt, Blake showed no signs of letting up. His
impeccable aim rarely faltered, and he scampered after every ball close
enough to get his racquet on. Then at 3-all he broke the Russian's serve and
cruised to the win, prompting a raucous roar from Blake's cheering section,
the "J Block."
- Blake and Andreev had played just once before, at Scottsdale in 2004,
where Blake also pulled out a straight-set win.
- Though the two had similar serve speeds, Blake out-aced the Russian 7-3.
