Against Todd Martin, second seed Andy Roddick is hoping to erase from his
memory his 2003 disaster here, when he was stunned in the first round by S
argis Sargsian.
THE STAGE
Second seed Roddick is hoping to erase from his memory his 2003 disaster here,
when he was stunned in the first round by Sargis Sargsian. While Roddick
hasn’t had a standout clay court season and is coming off a minor knee injury
he sustained at Rome, the world’s fastest server is more than capable of
gaining thesecond week here if he can establish his huge forehand and keep
his opponents at bay with a variety of service bombs. The fast-talking
21-year-old needs to establish himself at Roland Garros if he’s to be
considered a top-notch all around player. This is his fourth appearance here
and he’s only passed the first round once, but this is the first time that he
comes in as the reigning US Open champion and as a former No. 1. In perhaps
his last hurrah at Roland Garros, the 33-year-old Martin is aiming to at least
match his best result here – a fourth round run in 1991, his first year at
the tournament.
KEYS TO THE MATCH
Both men can serve the lights out, so it will be the player who returns
serve more adeptly who will likely come away the winner. Roddick must keep the
slow-footed Martin moving, not concede the net and make sure he dictates play
from the backcourt. One of the tour’s savviest tacticians, Martin is sure to
play into Roddick’s weaker backhand side and attack every short ball, forcing
Roddick to try to pass him. Martin is just as solid from the backcourt, but
can’t produce the large number of winners that he once did.
HEAD TO HEAD
Roddick owns a 3-1 advantage, losing a straight-setter in Miami in 2002, but
winning their two matches on clay in Atlanta and Hamburg and inching past
Martin this February in Memphis.
