Wild, Wild Start at Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - It's been a wild first couple of days at the Pacific
Life Open. Wild as in wild card.
Six of the eight players that were granted a wild card into this year's
96-draw event took advantage of the gift offered by the tournament, reaching
the second round over the past couple of days.
On Thursday, five wild cards moved into the final 64, including American
Angela Haynes, who defeated Mara Santangelo, 64 64. The California native made
her debut at Indian Wells last year, falling to Barbora Strycova in the first
round.
The 20-year-old will be challenged in the next round when she faces a Top 5
player for the first time as the second round opponent of No.3 seed Maria
Sharapova.
Haynes was joined in the next round by wild card and countrywoman Jessica
Kirkland, who survived three sets of action with Russian qualifier Galina
Voskoboeva, 62 06 76(4).
Haynes and Kirkland's victories put three American wild cards into the second
round. The third wild card, Jamea Jackson, won her first round match on
Wednesday.
Sesil Karatantcheva made her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour debut at last year's
Indian Wells event, where she surprised many by reaching the third round. Now,
the Bulgarian wild card has another victory at the Californian event,
overcoming a one set deficit to defeating Marlene Weingartner, 67(5) 60 62.
Karatantcheva moved through two matches at last year's event, but will face
the world's No.1 in her next match as she squares off with Lindsay Davenport.
Two other wild cards also advanced on Day 2 as Daja Bedanova defeated Kveta
Peschke and Ukraine's Viktoriya Kutuzova moved past qualifier Emmanuelle
Gagliardi, 76(4) 64.
The tournament's other two wild cards didn't far as well as the other six.
Alexa Glatch, the 15-year-old American fell in her Tour main draw debut to
Jill Craybas, 61 62. Also, Russian wild card Alisa Kleybanova fell in
straight sets to Anne Kremer, 64 64.
The highest ranked player in action on Thursday, No.50-ranked Emilie Loit
moved through with a victory against Petra Mandula, 63 60, while Marta Marrero
wasn't as fortune, falling to Korea's Yoon Jeong Cho, 26 60 63.
