Peschke Upset; Rubin Wins First Match
CINCINNATI, Ohio, USA - One seed was eliminated and one former Top 10 won her
first match of the season at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women's
Open on Monday.
Russia's Tatiana Panova served the tournament's first upset, knocking out No.8
seed Kveta Peschke, 64 76(6). Panova, currently ranked No.121, was displaying
the form that brought her into the Top 20 in 2002. Panova staved off a third
set threat to defeat the recent successful Czech who reached her first Grand
Slam fourth round at Wimbledon two weeks ago.
Panova advances and will face Korea's Yoon Jeong Cho in the second round, a
76(5) 63 winner over Alina Jidkova.
Former World No.6 Chanda Rubin won her first match of the season, defeating
fellow American Laura Granville 63 64. Rubin is making her third appearance at
a Tour event this season, struggling to recover from a left knee injury that
required surgery in 2004.
"It's been a long time since I've felt this good," Rubin said. "My game is
still in the building process, but I started off the week okay."
"I'm still not 100 percent yet, but I'm getting there," Rubin added. "It's
going to take some matches before I can see where things are at and to see
how well I recover after each match. But I feel like I can continue to get
stronger as the tournament goes on."
Rubin, a seven-time Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles champion will face the
winner of No.4 seed Daniela Hantuchova and Lilia Osterloh.
Aiko Nakamura lost a grinding first set to Abigail Spears but that only
seemed to motivate the young Japanese player. After losing 7-4 in the tiebreak,
Nakamura surged ahead in the second and third sets losing only three games to
defeat Spears, 67(4) 60 63.
Other winners on Day 1 include Israel's Shahar Peer, who beat Yuliana Fedak
62 63 and Kristina Brandi, who rolled past wildcard Jessica Kirkland, 63 61.
Four players solidifed their place in the singles main draw as the round of qualifying came to a close. All four matches featured one American and two advanced into the main draw. The USA's Bethanie Mattek and Cory Ann Avants both earned a berth into the 32-player main draw along with Austria's Sybille Bammer and Argentina's Maria Emilia Salerni.
