Wimbledon: Finals Preview
(1) Lindsay Davenport (USA) vs. (14) Venus Williams (USA) - Davenport leads
14-12
Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams, who jointly reigned over Wimbledon
between 1999 and 2001, are both one match away from returning to the Grand
Slam winners' circle for the first time in a long time.
Davenport is a winner of three majors, most recently at the 2000 Australian
Open, while four-time Grand Slam champion Williams collected her last major
trophy at the 2001 US Open. Between them, the American stars have held the
No.1 ranking for 86 weeks, earned $35 million in official prizemoney and
claimed 79 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles, including an Olympic gold
medal each. Needless to say, there will be no shortage of big-match
experience on Saturday.
This is the 27th chapter of this epic rivalry and their 12th meeting in a
final. While Davenport leads 14-12 overall, ominously, Venus leads 6-5 in
finals and 3-0 on grass. All three prior meetings on grass took place at
Wimbledon:
2000 Final: Won by Williams 63 76(3)
2001 Semifinals: Won by Williams 62 67(1) 61
2003 Quarterfinals: Won by Williams 62 26 61
Williams's 2003 quarterfinal win over Davenport was in fact her most recent
victory over her compatriot. She has since lost four encounters, all of them
on home soil – 2004 Stanford final, Los Angeles semifinals and US Open
fourth round and 2005 Amelia Island quarterfinals. However, it must also be
noted that Venus was unbeatable in six matches for two years between
Wimbledon 2001 and Wimbledon 2003 and she is yet to drop a set this
fortnight, while world No.1 Davenport has conceded two, against Kim Clijsters
in the fourth round and Amelie Mauresmo in the semifinals. Both women spent
approximately eight hours on court through their first six matches.
