Three Teens in Forest Hills Semifinals
FOREST HILLS, N.Y. - Three teenagers will highlight the semifinal field at this
year's $74,800 Forest Hill Women's Tennis Classic.
At just 22 years of age, last year's runner-up Iveta Benesova, will be the
eldest competitor in the Forest Hills final four and will be joined by 18
year olds Sania Mirza and Lucie Safarova, along with 15-year-old newcomer
Alexa Glatch.
Benesova now stands one match away from reaching the finals in Forest Hills
for the second straight year after Thursday's 61 64 victory against fellow
Czech player Zuzana Ondraskova.
Benesova had to defeat one of her countrywoman in the quarterfinals and will
have to defeat another in the semifinals if she is to move into Saturday's
championship match. On Friday, she will face Safarova, who defeated Italy's
Antonella Serra Zanetti, 63 63.
Safarova continues to use 2005 as a launching pad for her young career,
having already captured a title on the clay in Estoril and reaching a grass
court final in 's-Hertogenbosch. She has played well this week, winning both
of her matches in straight sets.
No.3 seed Mirza moves into the final four as the only seed left standing
after the first round of play. Now, she has set her sights on a second career
title, especially after her 62 61 victory against Roberta Vinci in the
quarterfinals.
But Mirza will have to avoid becoming the next casualty this week to the
American wild card Glatch, who did not have a victory on the Sony Ericsson
WTA Tour prior to arriving in Forest Hills.
Glatch moved into her first Tour semifinal with a 61 64 victory against
Martina Sucha. The No.460-ranked teenager made her debut on the Tour earlier
this year, losing to Jill Craybas in the first round at Indian Wells.
