June 20, 2005 Davenport, Kuznetsova Cruise, Schnyder Upset on Day 1 at Wimbledon WIMBLEDON, England - Two top seeds surged into the second round, another was forced to battle back, while a fourth suffered a first round upset during the first day of action at Wimbledon on Monday. World No.1 Lindsay Davenport and No.5 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova each cruised into the second round with few problems, while No.9 seed Anastasia Myskina had to rally back from a set down to secure her spot in the next round. Also, No.10 seed Patty Schnyder was the first seed to be eliminated at this year's event, falling to Italy's Antonella Serra Zanetti, 64 67(7) 63. Davenport, who captured the second of her three Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 1999, dropped just a pair of games in a 60 62 route of Alina Jidkova in her 12th appearance at the All England Club. The American has been one of the most consistent performers at the grass court event over the last seven years, reaching the quarterfinals or better during the period, which also included the title in 1999 and a runner-up performance to Venus Williams the following year. Davenport will next take on American Jamea Jackson, who secured a 62 63 victory against Marta Marrero in her first main draw appearance at Wimbledon. Similar to Davenport, No.5-seeded Kuznetsova spent very little time on court in her first action of the week, dropping just a single game in a 60 61 victory against British wild card Rebecca Llewellyn. Kuznetsova, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2003, avoided the upset loss in the first round she experienced in 2004. After capturing the Eastbourne title last year, Kuznetsova came to Wimbledon with confidence, but ended up falling to then No.118-ranked qualifier Virginie Razzano in the opening round. Next up for Kuznetsova will be India's Sania Mirza, a 63 36 86 winner against Akiko Morigami in her Wimbledon debut. Mirza already has a victory against Kuznetsova in 2005, defeating the US Open champion earlier this year in Dubai. While Davenport and Kuznetsova were able to breeze into round two, the road wasn't as smooth for No.9-seeded Anastasia Myskina. Following four straight losses on clay and then a quarterfinal upset to qualifier Roberta Vinci at Eastbourne, Myskina was finally able to see a break go her way - climbing back to defeating Czech qualifier Katerina Bohmova, 57 76(4) 64. Myskina was treated during the match for a right shoulder strain, but the injury isn't expected to force her out of the tournament and she will look to reach the third round when she next faces Japan's Aiko Nakamura, a 57 63 64 winner against Evie Dominkovic. Though Myskina was able to climb back to victory, No.10 seed Schnyder wasn't able to produce the same result in her loss to Serra Zanetti. The Swiss player posted another early exit at Wimbledon, falling in the first round for the fifth time in her career. Schnyder now sports a 6-10 mark at the All England Club, having lost in either the first or second round in nine of her 10 visits to the event. Serra Zanetti advanced to next face Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson, who defeating Tatiana Perebiynis, 63 76(5). No.23 seed Ai Sugiyama also suffered an upset on Day 1, losing to Roberta Vinci, 62 26 64. Vinci, who was a surprise semifinalist at Eastbourne, will look to continue her good grass court game against Anne Kremer, a 60 26 62 winner versus Abigail Spears. Meanwhile, No.13 seed Elena Likhovtseva moved on with a 62 62 win against Anna Smashnova. The Roland Garros semifinal will face Meghann Shaughnessy in the second round. Other early winners on Day 1 include No.17 seed Jelena Jankovic, No.27 Nicole Vaidisova, Argentina's Mariana Diaz-Oliva and Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.211.147
