FILDERSTADT, Germany (AP) -- Lindsay Davenport earned up her 50th career title
Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Amelie Mauresmo at the Porsche Grand
Prix.
The American became the 10th player to reach that milestone, relying on her big
serve for her 10th straight win against Mauresmo.
``I was really, really excited to get 50 titles and get it so quickly,'' the
29-year-old Davenport said after winning her fifth title of the year at the
$650,000 tournament.
She raced to a 5-1 lead in just 17 minutes by overpowering the fourth-ranked
Frenchwoman with hard serves and returns that had Mauresmo scrambling to avoid
breaks.
``I felt like I was in control,'' the second-ranked Davenport said. ``This is a
really, really fast court. My serve really helped me and got me out of trouble
all week.''
Mauresmo, denied her 400th career victory, only gave Davenport trouble once in
the match -- breaking her serve to take a 4-2 lead in the second set. Davenport
broke back immediately.
``She returned unbelievably after that game,'' Mauresmo said. ``She didn't give
me much of a chance to do much with that break. I'm disappointed but it was
impressive the way she played.''
Davenport won the event for the third time, winning previously in 2001 and 2004.
Mauresmo withdrew in last year's final against Davenport because of a leg
muscle strain after dropping the first set.
Davenport, with a 54-8 record, is in a close race with top-ranked Maria
Sharapova and third-ranked Kim Clijsters for the year-end No. 1 ranking.
Davenport spoke last year about retiring after a string of injuries but then
enjoyed a second wind, finishing 2004 in the top spot.
``I've really enjoyed the last 14 months -- if I keep playing like this, I have
no thoughts of retiring,'' she said.
