NEW YORK (Ticker) - Tennis icon Billie Jean King will appear as a judge in an
upcoming episode of the long-running TV series "Law & Order."
A huge fan of the show, King received the role from the Women's Sports
Foundation as a gift for her 60th birthday three years ago. She finally was
able to tape the show in March.
King's appearance airs Friday at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC, according to a release
from World Team Tennis.
Elton John's song, "Philadelphia Freedom," is a tribute to King, whose name
also has appeared in the "Peanuts" comic strip. However, she is best known
for her nationally televised dismantling of Bobby Riggs in three straight
sets in 1973, a match billed as "The Battle of the Sexes."
A champion for women's causes in and out of tennis, King, 63, is a 12-time
Grand Slam winner who served as president of the Women's Tennis Association
and co-founded World Team Tennis.
In 1972, she became the first tennis player - and woman - to be named Sports
Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year. In 1987, she was inducted to
the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
