Peterson out, Hart in
In a way, Friday might have been about two players finally winding up where
they belonged. Back in the summer of 2004, Morris Peterson signed with New
Orleans as a restricted free agent only to return to Toronto after the
Raptors matched the offer sheet.
The next summer, the Jazz tried to work out a trade for Jason Hart only to
watch as the Bobcats sent the point guard to Sacramento for a future
second-round draft pick and a salary-cap (trade) exception.
They both went back to the future Friday as Peterson signed with New Orleans
when the Jazz were unwilling to offer a contract longer than three years.
Then the Jazz moved quickly to sign Hart, a backup point guard who can also
play some shooting guard.
***
Agent Bill Neff is steaming at the way he says his client, veteran guard
Jason Hart, is being treated by the Kings. Neff said Monday that he has
received mixed messages regarding Hart, who has played in just 12 of 35 games
this season.
"I asked (coach) Eric (Musselman), whom I've known for a long time, why he
wouldn't give Jason a chance, and he said upper management wouldn't let him,"
the New York-based agent said. "He said he was being told to play" different
people.
So I went to (Kings basketball president) Geoff Petrie and asked him, and he
said he's never told a coach who to play. He said he didn't do it when Rick
(Adelman) was here, and he hasn't done it with Eric. So I went back to Eric
and asked him again, and he insisted upper management wanted him to play
(John) Salmons and (Quincy) Douby."
Petrie did not return a call to The Bee on Monday.
After speaking with Musselman and Petrie, Neff said he initially believed
both men were lying to him, then wondered if they were both telling the truth.
"Maybe 'upper management' was one or either both of the Maloofs," Neff said of
Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. "So I called them about a week or 10 days
ago, and they haven't returned my call yet. I just want someone to tell me why
the Kings will not give Jason a chance. Or why the Kings will not trade Jason
or even waive him. I want someone to say Jason has been outplayed, but that
has never been said. I want someone to say Jason has a bad attitude or
something because he's certainly not being given a chance.
"I'd even talk to them about a discount on a buyout, but we can't even get
that far. But I do know what the Kings are doing to Jason just isn't right.
It stinks, and it's not something that other players don't notice."
Hart has been inactive in five of the past six games. One of those inactives
was for personal reasons. Neff said other players were asking Hart if he had
done something to Musselman to warrant such treatment.
"When players see other players being mistreated," Neff said, "it makes them
think because they know it also might happen to them.
"When a team won't even give a guy a chance at a position in which players
have been struggling, it makes players think they're not trying to win. I'm
just so disappointed in the change in the organization's direction. It didn't
used to be like this.
"We had Matt Barnes in with the Kings, and they had paid some money to David
Bluthenthal, but that didn't make a difference. Matt outplayed him, and they
kept Matt. That's what teams do when they are trying to win."
Neff said the Kings have bypassed three opportunities to trade Hart, who came
into training camp determined to make amends for an admittedly poor 2005-06
season. Neff said each of the opportunities would have brought back salary
beyond this season.
"What I think the weirdest thing is why they won't waive him," Neff said.
"They won't play him, they won't trade him, and they won't waive him."
Neff said Hart was told during training camp he wasn't in the team's plans.
If Hart was told that, it appears to have been a truthful statement.
* * *
For what it's worth, Neff said Friday night on the phone that he couldn't
think of a better situation for Hart. When asked about minutes behind Deron
Williams, Neff said Hart told him, "As long as coach is fair, it'll work out."
Back when Larry Miller was talking about free agency before July 1, he cited
his belief that only a "journeyman" would be available for the Jazz. Well,
Hart fits the bill: The Jazz will be the sixth team in his seven-year career,
along with stints in the NBDL and in Greece.

Quick offer swayed Hart
Point guard says he's happy to have a job with Jazz
By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 07/20/2007 02:18:05 AM MDT
First come, first served.
In the revolving door world of the NBA, that's why free agent Jason Hart
agreed to a two-year, $5 million deal with the Utah Jazz.
At the end of a whirlwind visit to Salt Lake City, Hart said Thursday morning
that the Jazz's early interest in him and their willingness to quickly tender
a contract offer was critical in his decision to sign with Utah.
According to Jazz vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor,
he called agent Bill Neff at 12:05 a.m. on July 1 - five minutes into free
agency - and expressed interest in Hart.
When O'Connor made a firm contract offer last week, Hart quickly told Neff to
take it: "I said, 'Let's make it happen. I don't want to wait.' "
A good decision?
Both sides think so.
"Guys are still out there without a job," Hart said, "so I'm happy to
have one."
O'Connor sounds pleased that Hart's new job will bring him to Utah.
"We're happy to have a proven basketball player on our roster," he said.
"Every time Jason has gotten an opportunity to play, he's produced. . . .
When he's gotten an opportunity, he's always done a terrific job."
The Jazz's need for Hart evolved after veteran Derek Fisher was released from
the final three years of his contract so he could movehis family to a city
where specialized care is available for his young daughter, who is being
treated for eye cancer.
While recruiting Hart, O'Connor also pursued Toronto free agent Morris
Peterson. But he ended up signing a four-year, $23 million contract with New
Orleans. That facilitated the Jazz's contract offer to Hart.
O'Connor said the Jazz's interest in Hart would have continued even if they
had signed Peterson. But Hart isn't so sure.
"I'm happy Morris [went] to New Orleans to open the door for me," he said.
"Morris and I, we're pretty good friends. So when I see him I'll tell him,
'Thank you.' "
Referring to Hart, who attended Syracuse, O'Connor said, "He's somebody who's
gotten better. When he came out of school, people questioned whether he could
play the point guard position."
But that's precisely why the Jazz signed Hart - his proven ability at point
guard, where he will back-up emerging star Deron Williams. The two might also
be used together, much like Williams and Fisher last season.
"I consider myself a basketball player," Hart said. "So whatever the team
needs, that's what I'm going to try and provide."
Hart's best season was 2004-05, when he averaged 9.5 points and five assists
in 74 games with Charlotte.
Last season, Hart started with Sacramento, but was waived in March and signed
by the Clippers, who needed a point guard after Shaun Livingston suffered a
severe knee injury.
Playing in Sacramento "just didn't work out for me," Hart said. "They signed
John Salmons - a big combo guard - and they had big plans for him. In the NBA,
that happens. A lot of times, things don't go you're way. But that doesn't
mean your career is over.
"I could easily have hung it up and gave up for the season. But I continued to
work and when [Livingston] got hurt, my opportunity came. Fortunately, I was
ready for it. I was still in shape and showed I could still play."
In 23 games for the Clippers, Hart averaged 8.4 points and four assists in 32
minutes.
Hart considered re-signing with the Clippers, among others. But the Jazz's
immediate and persistent interest in him translated into an easy decision.
"I'm happy to be here," Hart said. "All those other teams, they are enemies
now."

First come, first served.
In the revolving door world of the NBA, that's why free agent Jason Hart agreed
to a two-year, $5 million deal with the Utah Jazz.
At the end of a whirlwind visit to Salt Lake City, Hart said Thursday morning
that the Jazz's early interest in him and their willingness to quickly tender a
contract offer was critical in his decision to sign with Utah.
According to Jazz vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor, he
called agent Bill Neff at 12:05 a.m. on July 1 - five minutes into free agency
- and expressed interest in Hart.
When O'Connor made a firm contract offer last week, Hart quickly told Neff to
take it: "I said, 'Let's make it happen. I don't want to wait.' "
A good decision?
Both sides think so.
"Guys are still out there without a job," Hart said, "so I'm happy to have one.
"
"很多人仍在市場上待價而沽,"Hart說,"所以我很高興能得到一份工作。"
O'Connor sounds pleased that Hart's new job will bring him to Utah.
"We're happy to have a proven basketball player on our roster," he said. "Every
time Jason has gotten an opportunity to play, he's produced. . . . When he's
gotten an opportunity, he's always done a terrific job."
"我們很高興能在球員名單上增加一位已經被證明過的籃球選手,"他說。"每一次當
Jason獲得機會,他都能有所貢獻。...當他獲得機會,他總能有超卓的表現。"
The Jazz's need for Hart evolved after veteran Derek Fisher was released from
the final three years of his contract so he could move his family to a city
where specialized care is available for his young daughter, who is being
treated for eye cancer.
While recruiting Hart, O'Connor also pursued Toronto free agent Morris Peterson
. But he ended up signing a four-year, $23 million contract with New Orleans.
That facilitated the Jazz's contract offer to Hart.
Hart。
O'Connor said the Jazz's interest in Hart would have continued even if they had
signed Peterson. But Hart isn't so sure.
"I'm happy Morris [went] to New Orleans to open the door for me," he said. "
Morris and I, we're pretty good friends. So when I see him I'll tell him, '
Thank you.' "
"Morris加入紐澳良剛好為了開了一扇門,我很高興。"他說。"Morris和我是非常好的
朋友。所以我下次看到他,我會向他說,'謝謝。'"
Referring to Hart, who attended Syracuse, O'Connor said, "He's somebody who's
gotten better. When he came out of school, people questioned whether he could
play the point guard position."
But that's precisely why the Jazz signed Hart - his proven ability at point
guard, where he will back-up emerging star Deron Williams. The two might also
be used together, much like Williams and Fisher last season.
Deron Williams
"I consider myself a basketball player," Hart said. "So whatever the team needs
, that's what I'm going to try and provide."
"我認定自己是個籃球員,"Hart說。"所以不管球隊的需求是什麼,我都會努力去嘗試
提供。"
Hart's best season was 2004-05, when he averaged 9.5 points and five assists in
74 games with Charlotte.
But that doesn't mean
your career is over.
"I could easily have hung it up and gave up for the season. But I continued to
work and when [Livingston] got hurt, my opportunity came. Fortunately, I was
ready for it. I was still in shape and showed I could still play."
"我可以輕易地選擇放棄接下來的球季。但我仍持續自主練習,所以當Livingston受傷
後,我的機會就來了。很幸運地,我已經做好了萬全準備。我仍保持了理想的體態而且展
現了我仍可以打球。"
In 23 games for the Clippers, Hart averaged 8.4 points and four assists in 32
minutes.
Hart considered re-signing with the Clippers, among others. But the Jazz's
immediate and persistent interest in him translated into an easy decision.
"I'm happy to be here," Hart said. "All those other teams, they are enemies now
."
"我很高興能加入爵士隊,"Hart說。"現在所有其他的球隊對我來說都是敵人了。"
