Analysis: The Jazz wanted a shooter to stretch the defense, and they got one
in Almond, possibly the best shooter in the draft. Almond is also a crafty
scorer but needs to work on his athleticism. Fesenko is a physical low-post
presence who could be a nice complement to Mehmet Okur in the paint someday.
Considering where they were picking, the Jazz drafted well.

Comments: The Jazz picked up the sleeper of the draft last year nabbing Paul
Millsap in the second round at the 47th pick. This year they may have grabbed
the sleeper of the first round with their 25th selection of Morris Almond.
Almond was the third leading scorer in the nation and shows the ability to
score from outside equally well as midrange. Michael Redd was a similar college
player, a great scorer but skinny and not overly athletic. The similarity was
too much for the Jazz to allow him to fall into the second round, the way Redd
did (taken 43rd in 2000). Fesenko is a nice upside pick at 38 who may never
deliver on his promise, but could turn into a beast in a few seasons.

A team with a very good track record in the draft seems to have made another
couple of solid picks, despite drafting fairly low. Morris Almond fills a
need as a perimeter shooter, has great value at #25, and also has the type of
character and intangibles that the Jazz covet. Kyrylo Fesenko is a bit of a
mystery to most people at #38, but he also fills a need as a rebounder inside
and has the toughness to endear himself to Jazz fans and especially Coach
Jerry Sloan. He's not afraid to take or dish out pain and will give Utah
plenty of youthful energy running the floor and crashing the offensive glass.
He's not exactly a great fit as far as his off the court habits go, but there
is still time to iron out those things if he shows the desire to stick in the
league.

They needed a shooter, and Almond might be the best one in the draft. But he's
going to have to improve his defense if he wants to play for Jerry Sloan.

The Jazz did well for themselves, they wanted shooting and they got a great
shooter in Morris Almond, they also got some help in the paint with Fesenko.
The Jazz are rumored to be buying out Fesenko's European deal, meaning he'll
make the roster. Quality pick ups on both picks, and both players should
contribute as rookies.
