Utah Jazz Preseason Preview: Shooting Guards

While the point guard situation is pretty clear cut, shooting guard is perhaps
the most difficult position to predict for the Utah Jazz. Fortunately, Jerry
Sloan and his staff have plenty of options. Unfortunately, each of them is far
from ideal. Gordan Giricek, Derek Fisher, Ronnie Brewer, and C.J. Miles are
all vying for minutes here. Last season, Andrei Kirilenko, Deron Williams, and
Matt Harpring played heavy minutes there. With such a convoluted line-up,
training camp will go a long way toward determining Sloan's off guard rotation.
在控球後衛上的分工明確, 但得分後衛可能是爵士最難以預測的位置。樂觀的想,

Despite his injuries and occasional disagreements with Sloan, Giricek looks to
be the front runner for the starting line-up. While he is wildly inconsistent,
he is a solid mid-range threat who also possesses a cadre of creative moves.
He is a good spot-up shooter and could thrive if Williams develops the ability
to drive and kick. Giricek is surprising strong and can get to the basket.
His idea of a good shot and Sloan's definition are sometimes polar opposites.
He sometimes gets too trigger happy and hoists up shots without abandon ─
a no-no in Utah's line-up. The defensive ability is there... the desire is a
different story. He is a good passer and a below average rebounder. He has
been plagued with injuries, but according to Kevin O'Connor, he's not only in
shape but has gotten stronger. Sloan went public saying that he loves having
Giricek on the roster and any disagreements have been exaggerated in the press.
Still, with many hungry youngsters behind him, he's going to have to work hard
to earn starter's minutes.

Fisher's abilities were discussed in the previous article. Because of his
outside shooting prowess, he will most likely play some minutes alongside
Williams. Don't be surprised if he is an occasional starter.

First-round draft pick Ronnie Brewer is perhaps the most intriguing of the
bunch, and one Jazz fans are extremely excited to watch. Brewer brings much
needed athleticism to one of the least athletic teams in the NBA. He is
quick and can jump out of the building. During the Rocky Mountain Review, he
displayed a great all-around game. On the offensive end, he is a capable
finisher and will help when Williams chooses to push the tempo. He is also an
underrated outside shooter. Much has been said about his unorthodox shooting
form (due to a childhood accident); as Shawn Marion, Michael Adams, and Bill
Laimbeer would agree, who cares as long as it goes in? He definitely has NBA
three-point range. He is an excellent rebounder, particularly on the defensive
end. Brewer surprised many with his deft passing and allows Sloan to have
another creator on offense. Defensively, he has all the potential in the world.
At 6'7" and with his long arms, he will develop into a lockdown defender. With
his ability to play three positions, he brings the versatility Jazz brass love.
There is no question that Brewer is the shooting guard of the future. Could he
possibly be the two of the present? He will earn minutes and can contribute
immediately. Several teams are going be hitting themselves for passing on him.

Miles is another player full of potential. As the season winded down and he
was finally given some minutes, he produced. He's added some muscle to his
thin frame and has been working hard this entire off-season. Miles is an
erratic shooter, but has a stroke that will work if he continues to hone it.
He can get to the line in his limited minutes. He is a surprisingly good
rebounder and can adequately lead a break. Defensively, he has a ways to go.
He is quick enough to stay in front of his man, but just commits too many
silly fouls. He is also quite young, having come right out of high school.
Subsequently, he will be hard pressed to get many minutes with the competition
that's ahead of him.
邁爾斯則是另一位充滿潛力的球員。一直到球季接近尾聲才獲得了上場時間, 而

Kirilenko finished the season starting in the back court. While it was a short
term fix due to the injury bug, it allowed Sloan to play a large, tantalizing
line-up. It's obvious AK is naturally a small forward, but having the option
could be a trump card for the Jazz. If he played extensive minutes here, it
could be the first time a shooting guard lead the league in blocked shots.

Harpring also is another possibility. In Sloan's offensive and defensive sets,
the two swing positions are interchangeable. Offensively, he is a much better
outside threat than Kirilenko. Defensively, Harpring matches up better with
threes. Expect to see the two of them playing a lot together.
哈普林也是另一個可能的選擇。 在Sloan的進攻和防守套路中, 兩翼位置是可以

Williams can swing over when teaming up with Fisher. Ditto for Dee Brown.
Free agent Roger Powell is a scrapper who may make the team due to his tireless
hustle and effort. He won't earn minutes at all, but is a Sloan-type player.

To sum it up, Utah has a lot of options, but not a clear-cut answer. It is
the opinion of this writer that Brewer should be given the opportunity right
off the bat. He could join with Williams in forming the Jazz backcourt for the
next decade. Training camp will be integral. There will be a lot of competition
and it will be entertaining to see who emerges as the rotational players.
總括來說, 猶他有很多的選擇, 但卻沒有一個肯定的答案。筆者認為釀酒人應該
立即得到機會試一試。他和D-Will兩人將是爵士下一個世代的後場搭配。訓練營
將總結一切。其中有不少的競爭, 看誰將脫穎而出進入固定的輪替陣容之中會是
