Things are looking up
Kirilenko getting involved, making impact

If this is what happens when players complain, maybe the Jazz could use
one big intervention.
Just 10 days ago, Andrei Kirilenko was practically despondent about his
fading role in the Jazz's offense. He was just standing around, he said,
never getting the ball.
"I still can't find my game," Kirilenko said after the Jazz lost to
Minnesota on Dec. 5. "I mean, sometimes involve me. [I will] touch the ball,
probably swing the ball, run a play. Sometimes I don't feel involved in the
set. It's hard."
Now it's hard to remember that lost Russian soul. Kirilenko met separately
with Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and assistant coach Phil Johnson, and suddenly,
everything changed. It's as though the Jazz swung a trade for a great new
player.
Kirilenko has posted a double-double in every game since those meetings.
Until Wednesday's dropoff of one point, his scoring had climbed in every
game since his return from an ankle injury. Even his defense is much more
high-energy now, according to Sloan.
"He's got the ability to disrupt an offense, and he's done some of that
lately," Sloan said.
More than disrupt, if Wednesday's victory over Portland is any indication.
Kirilenko tied his career high with eight blocks, while also grabbing a
career-high 16 rebounds.
Kirilenko said he feels different now, too, but says an even bigger
change has occurred as the Jazz head east for a five-game trip beginning
tonight in Indiana: The whole team is better.
"I feel like we're a better team than a month ago. We are little bit more
confident right now. It's not just me - everybody has more patience,"
Kirilenko said modestly. "It's kind of complicated. When you win, you have
good emotions as a team. When you lose, you get overpressed by media, by
fans."
Pressured, overpressed - you get his meaning. And with the Jazz, now
10-12 on the season, playing more confidently, Kirilenko said, his game has
taken off, too.
"Coach said he wanted me to have the ball more, too, but not to shoot,
shoot. I pass, run plays, stay involved," Kirilenko said. "My teammates
look for me, and I look for them."
Good example: Deron Williams at one point Wednesday, pointing at the
open lane to the basket and gesturing for Kirilenko to use it. When he did,
the point guard fed him for an easy dunk.
"He's really tried hard to be everything he can be every night, and that's
important. Not many guys can have a sorry attitude and play well," Sloan
said. "He's blocking shots, defending, passing the basketball, executing
the offense, all those things which are very important to us. Only now he
gets to handle the ball more, which is what he wants."
It's what Sloan wants, too. So the coach put Kirilenko back into his
normal spot in the starting lineup - though not because having him on the
floor at the start is necessarily critical, the coach said. It's just
because, if Kirilenko is going to play with this much intensity, the Jazz
want him to play much more frequently.
"We just want him on the floor as much as possible, that's all," Sloan
said. "It's not whether he plays better or worse off the bench. It's a
matter of playing time as much as anything."
Kirilenko, of course, prefers to start. It allows him to set a tone for
the entire night, he said.
"From the beginning, it's not like every team starts out pow-pow-pow.
No. You're like 75 percent at the start," he explained. "So when you come
out hard, you can send a message right away: We play hard. We're ready."
He certainly is lately.
Jazz Notes: Any sanctions against rookies Robert Whaley or Deron Williams
will probably come today, a team spokesman said. The Jazz on Thursday
continued their investigation into the players' involvement in a
confrontation at a Park City club over the weekend, but are not ready to
levy fines or suspensions. Whaley and Williams accompanied the team on its
flight to Indianapolis.
