Q&A with former Utah coach and executive Frank Layden
Thursday, November 08, 2007
Q: You retired from the Jazz in 2002. What have you been doing to keep busy?
A: We've been doing a little traveling. We just got back from the East. We have
a granddaughter at Boston College. Then we went to Maine, played some golf and
did some sightseeing. We're busy here [in Salt Lake City]. We love the theater.
We see the Jazz. We go to a few college games. This summer we're going to
London for theater school. Then we're taking a cruise to the Greek Islands.
We're living the good life.
Q: How many games do you see each season?
A: I go to about a third of the Jazz games. This year I'm going to Florida
for three months. I'll be back in April to see the end of the season. I try
to get around to the colleges here, too, and the D-League in Orem, Utah. In
the summer, I go to a lot of baseball games - a lot more baseball games than
basketball games. I love baseball, and I love minor-league baseball.
Q: What do you miss most about coaching?
A: I miss the relationships with the coaches and with the players. I used to
enjoy the summer league, the preseason games in small towns.
Q: What don't you miss?
A: I don't miss the bad calls. Actually, I always felt the problem with
professional basketballwas that it interfered with my personal life. There
were too many games, too many practices. Now you have summer leagues, tryout
camps, individual tryouts. It has gone from aseven-month job to a 12-month job.
Q: Name a current player you wish you would have coached?
A: I like Deron Williams. He's one of the few players I see who seems to make
great decisions. Kids today make so many bad decisions. So many bad shots are
thrown up. They try to catch up too quick. But Deron Williams is a good
decision maker.
