Utah Jazz: Jazz officials doubt ref's allegations 好傻好天真 By Jay Drew The Salt Lake Tribune Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan doesn't buy former NBA referee Tim Donaghy's allegations. Neither does vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor. Several Jazz fans, however, are convinced that some of what Donaghy alleged in a letter filed by his attorney Tuesday has a sprinkling of truth, especially accusations that star players are treated differently to keep them in games and protect ticket sales and TV ratings. NBA commissioner David Stern called the allegations from Donaghy - the former referee who was at the center of a gambling scandal - baseless and false before Tuesday's Game 3 of the NBA Finals, saying they were self-serving and made in an attempt to get a lighter sentence. "I listened to what commissioner Stern said. He says it a lot better than I do," O'Connor said after the Jazz auditioned five NBA Draft candidates on Wednesday morning. "I would agree with everything that he said." Sloan also followed the company line, saying he doesn't believe any corruption exists. "No, I don't think so," he said. "You can question every single thing that happens in this game if you want. But the integrity of the league is more important than one person." Donaghy pleaded guilty last year to felony charges that he took cash payoffs from gamblers and bet on games himself. He said some NBA referees are influenced by cozy relationships with league officials and that a 2002 playoff series - believed to have pitted the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings - was rigged to ensure it went seven games to increase revenue for the league. The star treatment claims struck a chord with Riverton's Jeff Sorensen, a 32-year-old CPA, and Orem's Roger Terry, a 52-year-old editor for BYU publications. Both are self-described Jazz fans. "The star system, there's no question, that's true," Sorensen said. "You watch any game. I don't think anyone would deny that, not even David Stern." Added Terry: "Star treatment is obvious. Even more than that, look at the way fouls are called, home and away. Watch any NBA game where you don't care who wins, and it is obvious they favor the home team." Neither fan believed all of what Donaghy claimed, however, especially that the league has an interest in prolonging series. "Too many sweeps to believe that," Sorensen said. O'Connor said beliefs that the NBA is biased against small market teams such as Utah and Sacramento have no validity. "That's the conspiracy theory again," he said. " . . . I don't subscribe to series [having to last] seven games, I don't subscribe to any of that stuff. What I look at is each game, and how it is played. I think the referees work their tail off to get situations right." Sloan and O'Connor also said they don't believe a directive has come from the top that stars should get special treatment. "I think the really good players know how to get calls," O'Connor said. "And that's why they are really good players."
